O’Dowd’s Irish Pub & Grill located in The Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel is well-known for its
great live entertainment, mouth-watering entrees and selection of Donegal Draft
Delights. However, more and more of our guests are recognizing the Pub for its
expansive collection of nearly 50 whiskeys, scotches and bourbons from
around the globe.
The staff at Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub & Grill believes that gaining a greater understanding
of whiskey types allows the taster to develop an appreciation for the libation. While there are a number of
variations, the four primary types are as follows:
- Irish Whiskey - made from a combination of malted and unmalted
barley blended with other grains;
tripled distilled and aged at least
five years in oak barrels
- Single Malt Scotch - made from 100% malted barley and double
distilled and aged for at least three years in oak barrels
- Blended Scotch - combination of mature single malt scotch and
young grain whiskies
- Bourbon - distilled from at least 51% corn and aged in new
charred-oak barrels for a minimum of
two years
Although there are many ways to enjoy whiskey,
it is best enjoyed in a snifter. The shape
of the glass enables the taster to swirl the whiskey releasing the aromas and
highlighting the flavors. Once in the glass,
almost all whiskeys benefit from the addition of
water, which opens up the spirit and unlocks the complex flavors and aromas deep within
the flavor profile.
